A Danish pastry, sometimes abbreviated danish especially in the USA, is a viennoiserie pastry, of Viennese origin, which has become a specialty of Denmark and neighbouring Scandinavian countries.
Put them on the table with coffee at the end of your Sunday Dinner and you are sure to get kudos.Ingredients
2 tubes crescent rolls 2- 8oz. blocks cream cheese, softened 3 eggs, separated 1½ c. sugar, divided in half 1 tsp. vanilla 1 c. walnut pieces cinnamon
Procedure
Roll out 1 tube of rolls in a 9x13 pan evenly, pressing perforations together. Set aside.In mixing bowl, combine and beat the 2 pkg. cream cheese, the 3 egg yolks, ¾ c. sugar and 1 tsp. vanilla, until creamy.
Then, spread this cheese mixture over the dough.
Roll out the other tube of rolls on top of cheese mixture, as evenly as possible.
Press shallow dimples in the dough, here and there.
In small bowl, using a fork, whip the 3 egg whites. Pour atop the dough and spread evenly. (This forms the glaze.)
Now, sprinkle the remaining ¾ c. sugar on egg whites.
Then, sprinkle on the 1 cup walnut pieces. Liberally dust with the cinnamon. (about 2 Tbl.) Bake for 25-30 minutes.
Allow to cool, before cutting into pieces. (It’s a good idea to hide a piece or two for later.)
Yield: 16 to 20 servings
Necessary Equipment:
4 qt. mixing bowl small bowl for egg whites electric mixer measuring spoons, ¾ c., ½ c., 1 c.9x13 baking dish rubber spatula and fork
